The 7th International Anniversary Conference

The Magna Carta Paradigm:
Meditations on an 800-Year Old Illustrious Document

Baia Mare, 9-11 October, 2015

Magna Charta marks a crucial moment in the history of mankind, as it was the first instance when words were attached to the intrinsic need of human nature for freedom and self-expression.  It represented the foundation for other bills of rights, for constitutions and law systems, for defining such concepts as equality, liberties, justice, protection against discriminations of any kind, etc. Starting from this prototype, European, American and some other civilizations constructed their understanding of human rights, and eventually, this path led to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The year 2015 and Magna Carta have been read and interpreted by many researchers in the domain of history and philosophy, but they have also been interpreted in literature and the arts. Novels, historical writings, Popular Culture interpretations, fundamental laws and movies have praised this philosophy of freedom that is so important for our vision on life and society today.

The Baia Mare University Centre (part of the Technical University in Cluj Napoca) has a 7-year long tradition of its international anniversary conferences, and we thought that the year 2015 cannot offer any more challenging an anniversary than that of the Magna Charta; especially so, as in Baia Mare the late Professor Victor Iancu started one of the first MA programs in human rights in Romania, after the communist period. Consequently, this conference will also be dedicated to his memory.

We expect academics and professionals from various related domains – literature, history, philosophy, law, human rights, politics, culture and civilization, the arts, popular culture – to come together to celebrate Magna Charta and its direct (or indirect) influences in today’s Weltanschauung.
Pl presenters might get a better understanding of how we envisage this conference to be from the profile of the four keynote speakers we invited to honour us on this event:

Presentations are to be held in English or Romanian, for 15 minutes, followed by 10-minute sessions of questions and answers.
