Dan Horatiu Popescu, Associate Professor with Partium University in Oradea, the Department of English Language and Literature, with a presentation entitled “Romancing Negotiation”, which he summarized as follows:

The lecture will explore some of the accounts, both fictional and non-fictional, having as their protagonists the main actors in the events leading to the emergence, elaboration, and signing of the Magna Carta. A special emphasis will be placed on William Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke, who truly embodied, at the time, the ideals of chivalry. Caught in between the loyalty to the Crown and his own principles, William Marshall rose from a minor nobility background to become a regent of England in 1216. A good number of novelist, biographers, and historians in the 20th and 21st century, felt compelled to re-write and reconsider the life of one of the most powerful men in Mediaeval Europe. Using their recent works, the lecture will highlight the paradoxes and mixed feelings that subtended William Marshall’s military and political career.
